SMALL BUDGET, BIG RESULTS: How Creativity can Drive your Business Forward
Today, you don't need millions or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to build and grow your business. All you need are smarts, creativity and a willingness to experiment. In this talk, Deacon Webster, chief creative officer at Walrus, a NY-based independent advertising agency, will use real-life examples to illustrate how businesses of any size can drive meaningful results simply by focusing creatively on media channels they're probably already using. You’ll see some fun and decidedly quirky ads, and get inspiration for marketing your brand. Named Advertising Age's "Northeast Small Agency of the Year”, Walrus has done work for national brands including General Mills, Emergen-C, AMC, Amazon, Bloomberg, Remy Cointreau, Conde Nast, XOJET and HBO, among others. Known for combining intelligence with humor and always respecting its audience, Deacon’s creative work has been recognized by the advertising industry’s top award shows including the One Show, D&AD, Cannes, The Art Directors Club, Communication Arts, the Clios and the Effies.

THE POWER OF REPRESENTATION IN MEDIA
Mass media is the mirror of our lives, reflecting who we are and influencing what we see. The stories it tells are extremely persuasive but we don't often acknowledge the power it has over us...or the unique power that we as marketers, entrepreneurs, and investors have over it as the storytellers of our brands and businesses. Join Kamala for a brief presentation on why diverse representations matter in media and what we can all do to make the stories we tell more reflective of the world we live in.

MAKING MAGIC WITH ANTICIPATORY DESIGN

Batman’s butler Alfred is remarkable not because of his dedication to his job, but his ability to anticipate Bruce Wayne’s every need. Users all want to be Bruce Wayne. Whether visiting a hospital website, retail application, or bill pay, users want Alfred by their side, anticipating their wants, needs, and preferences. Thus, for those of us working in web design, our ability to anticipate users' every need is becoming vital, and even expected – consider Amazon, where they speak of shipping customers items they have not yet purchased based on prior purchases! This talk explores the magic behind creating anticipatory design and content.  • We’ll look at the familiar (customer) side of anticipatory design. • Then we'll flip it on its head to look at the back end. • Next we'll break that down into best practices (i.e. How YOU can do this at home). • Finally we’ll walk through a case study of how a specific project moved from research, through design, and into implementation – and what the customers thought once they saw it.

CONTENT IN CONTEXT: Creating Branded Content That Works
With all this talk about “native advertising,” its easy to forget that “native” is still an adjective, and that an understanding of context is vital for creating branded content that resonates with readers and achieves campaign objectives. This session presents a four-step method for creating effective branded content campaigns, illustrated with some improvised strategy creation based on audience suggestion that proves it works for any service or product. This talk serves as a great overview for those new to native — offering illustrative examples that put buzzwords into context — and will also provide deeper insights for those who have been around the branded block, with data that supports native as a tactic.
